What Our Students Say

Real stories from students who achieved their dream of studying abroad with our guidance and support.

“StudyUSA Nepal helped me navigate the entire application process for my Masters in Computer Science. I was admitted to Northeastern University with a 50% tuition scholarship and secured a co-op internship at a tech company in my first year. After graduation, I started my STEM OPT at Amazon in Seattle. The counselors knew exactly which universities offer good funding for Nepali students and which programs have the best STEM OPT employment rates. I could not have done this alone.”

“I took the community college pathway that StudyUSA Nepal recommended and it was the best decision of my life. I spent 2 years at Santa Monica College for just $9,200/year, got a 3.8 GPA, and transferred to UCLA — a university I never would have been admitted to as a freshman. My degree says UCLA, and the total cost was about $80,000 instead of $200,000+. I am now working at a marketing firm in LA on OPT. The 2+2 pathway saved my family lakhs of rupees.”

“I received a full teaching assistantship for my PhD in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech through the guidance of StudyUSA Nepal. They helped me identify professors whose research aligned with mine and coached me on writing a compelling Statement of Purpose. My tuition is fully covered and I receive $2,400/month stipend plus health insurance. I have published 3 papers and am on track to graduate in 5 years. For anyone considering a PhD in the US — it is essentially free education with a salary.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an F-1 and J-1 visa?
F-1 is the standard student visa for full-time academic study at a US university or college. It allows OPT (work after graduation) and on-campus employment. J-1 is an exchange visitor visa, used for Fulbright scholars, government-sponsored students, and exchange programs. Key difference: J-1 scholars funded by their government or US government may be subject to a 2-year home residency requirement after their program ends, meaning they must return to Nepal for 2 years before applying for H-1B or permanent residency. F-1 students have no such requirement. Most Nepali students apply for F-1 unless they are on Fulbright or a government exchange program.
How much bank balance do I need for the US Embassy interview?
You must demonstrate financial capacity for the full first-year cost of attendance (tuition + living expenses + health insurance). For most universities, this means showing $35,000-75,000 in bank balance. The funds should be in your account (or your sponsor's — typically a parent) with consistent balance over 6+ months. Sudden large deposits raise red flags. Required documents: bank statements (6-12 months), sponsor's income certificate, tax returns, property documents (if applicable), and an affidavit of support. If you have a scholarship, you only need to show the uncovered portion. For community college students, the requirement is lower ($20,000-35,000).
Can I work while studying in the US on an F-1 visa?
Yes, with specific rules. On-campus employment: allowed from day one, up to 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during breaks. No special permission needed. Average pay: $10-15/hour. Off-campus employment: not allowed in the first year except in cases of severe economic hardship. After the first year, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows paid internships related to your major. After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides 12 months of work authorization (36 months for STEM graduates). Unauthorized off-campus work is a serious visa violation that can result in deportation.
What is the difference between SAT-required and SAT-optional universities?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many US universities have permanently adopted test-optional policies. This means SAT or ACT scores are not required for admission. Over 1,800 universities are currently test-optional or test-free. However, some competitive universities (MIT, Georgetown, Purdue, Georgia Tech) have reinstated test requirements. If a school is test-optional and you have a strong SAT score (1300+), submitting it strengthens your application. If your score is average, applying test-optional lets the university focus on your GPA, essays, and activities. Tip: even at test-optional schools, merit scholarships often require or consider test scores.
How does the community college to university pathway work?
The 2+2 pathway: spend 2 years at an affordable community college ($8,000-15,000/year) completing general education and major prerequisites, then transfer to a 4-year university to complete your Bachelor's degree. This saves $30,000-80,000 compared to 4 years at university. Many community colleges have guaranteed transfer agreements with state universities — for example, California community colleges have TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) to UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and more. Your final degree is from the university, not the community college. Employers cannot tell the difference. The F-1 visa covers both CC and university study.
