STEM OPT: How to Work 3 Years in USA After Graduation
What Is STEM OPT?
STEM OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a 24-month extension of the standard 12-month OPT work authorization for graduates of STEM-designated degree programs. Combined, STEM graduates get 36 months (3 years) of legal work authorization in the US without employer sponsorship. This is the longest post-study work period offered by any major study destination — longer than UK (2 years), Canada (3 years but requires PGWP application), and Australia (2-4 years).
Who Qualifies?
To qualify for STEM OPT, you must:
- Have completed a degree from a STEM Designated Degree Program (check the DHS list at StudyintheStates.dhs.gov)
- Be currently on post-completion OPT
- Have a job offer from an E-Verify enrolled employer
- The job must be related to your STEM field of study
STEM-Designated Fields (Examples)
The DHS maintains a list of hundreds of qualifying STEM CIP codes:
- Engineering: All fields — civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer, biomedical, aerospace, environmental
- Computer Science: CS, software engineering, cybersecurity, AI, data science
- Mathematics & Statistics: Applied math, statistics, actuarial science
- Sciences: Physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, neuroscience
- Business (STEM-designated): Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Quantitative Finance, Operations Research
- Health Sciences: Biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, public health (some programs)
Important: The STEM designation is based on the CIP code of your specific program, not the department name. A "Data Analytics" program in a business school may have a STEM CIP code. Verify with your university before enrolling.
STEM OPT Application Process
- Your employer signs a Form I-983 (Training Plan for STEM OPT Students) detailing your role, learning objectives, and supervision
- Your university's International Student Office issues a new I-20 recommending STEM OPT
- File Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) with USCIS, including: new I-20, copy of current EAD, passport photos, and $410 fee
- You can continue working on your current OPT while the STEM extension is pending (if filed before expiry)
- Receive new EAD card valid for 24 additional months
STEM OPT Rules and Requirements
- Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify (a federal employment verification program)
- You must be paid at a comparable rate to US workers in similar positions
- Your employer submits validation reports every 6 and 12 months
- Maximum 150 days of unemployment (vs. 90 days for standard OPT)
- You must report any material changes (job change, address change, employer change) to your university
- Self-employment is not allowed on STEM OPT (unlike standard OPT)
Salary Expectations During STEM OPT
Entry-level salaries for Nepali STEM graduates in the US:
- Software Engineer: $85,000-130,000
- Data Scientist: $80,000-120,000
- Mechanical Engineer: $70,000-95,000
- Electrical Engineer: $75,000-100,000
- Civil Engineer: $65,000-85,000
- Business Analyst (STEM): $70,000-95,000
Over 3 years of STEM OPT, total earnings: $200,000-400,000+. This often exceeds the total cost of your US education.
From STEM OPT to H-1B
The primary goal for many STEM OPT workers is transitioning to an H-1B visa. With 3 years of STEM OPT, you have 3 chances at the H-1B lottery (filed in March each year). With a US Masters or PhD, you are entered in both the regular pool (65,000) and the advanced degree pool (20,000), effectively doubling your chances. Many employers begin the H-1B process within your first year of OPT employment.
