F-1 Visa Interview Tips for Nepali Students

Understanding the F-1 Visa Interview

The F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu (Maharajgunj) is often the most stressful part of the study abroad journey. But with proper preparation, there is nothing to fear. The consular officer wants to verify three things: 1) You are a genuine student with a real plan. 2) You can finance your education. 3) You intend to return to Nepal after your studies (though this is interpreted more flexibly than many believe).

Documents to Bring

  • Essential: I-20 (original), SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation page, passport (valid 6+ months), admission letter, academic transcripts (all levels), and financial documents
  • Financial: Bank statements (6-12 months), sponsor's income proof, tax returns, property documents, scholarship letter (if applicable), affidavit of support
  • Supporting: Standardized test scores (TOEFL, SAT, GRE), resume/CV, research proposal (for graduate students), photographs

Common Interview Questions and How to Answer

"Why do you want to study in the USA?"

Focus on academic reasons specific to your program. "The US has the best computer science programs in the world, and my university's AI research lab is ranked #3 globally" is better than "I want a better life." Mention specific professors, research groups, or unique program features.

"Why this university?"

Show you have researched the university. Mention specific programs, professors, ranking in your field, career placement rates, or unique opportunities. Avoid generic answers like "it is a good university."

"How will you fund your education?"

Be specific and clear. "My father is a civil engineer earning NPR 200,000/month and has saved NPR 80 lakhs. My mother owns agricultural land valued at NPR 1 crore. They will fund my education through savings and land income. Here are the bank statements showing consistent balance." Concrete numbers and documentation are key.

"What will you do after graduation?"

This is the trickiest question. The officer knows most students hope to work in the US after graduation — do not lie about this. A balanced answer: "I plan to gain 2-3 years of professional experience in the US through OPT to apply my education practically. Long-term, I want to bring this expertise back to Nepal's growing technology sector." This is honest and shows both career planning and Nepal ties.

"Do you have relatives in the US?"

Be honest. Having relatives in the US is common for Nepali students and is not a negative. If asked, mention who they are and what they do. Do not hide information — dishonesty is the fastest way to get denied.

Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Memorizing scripted answers — speak naturally
  2. Bringing unnecessary documents in a disorganized pile
  3. Being vague about your study plan or university choice
  4. Sudden large bank deposits right before the interview
  5. Inconsistencies between your DS-160 and interview answers
  6. Not knowing basic details about your program (courses, duration, professors)
  7. Getting nervous and giving long, rambling answers — be concise
  8. Lying about anything — consular officers are trained to detect dishonesty
  9. Not disclosing previous visa denials or immigration history
  10. Arriving late to your appointment

After the Interview

If approved, the officer keeps your passport and you collect it (with visa stamp) in 3-5 business days. If denied (221(g) administrative processing), you may need to provide additional documents. If refused (214(b) — most common), you can reapply after strengthening your case (better financial documentation, clearer study plan, stronger ties to Nepal). A refusal is not permanent — many students are approved on their second or third attempt.
